Manu is one of the most important tropical parks in the world and was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1977. It is home to a variety of different ecological zones that descend from 4,000mt-13,120ft to 300mt-984ft. The park is the largest tropical jungle reserve in South America and one of the largest in the world. It harbors unique wildlife and has the richest diversity of bird life in the world - over a thousand species have been recorded here. No other park on earth can compare to Manu in terms of animal life. There are 13 species of monkeys and one of the world's rarest mammals: the giant river otter. We'll see macaws, deer, black and white caimans, capybaras (world's largest rodent), tapirs, butterflies, ocelots, parrots and, with luck, the elusive jaguar.
Itinerary
1st day: Cuzco - Boca Manu and Manu Biostation
We pick you up from your hotel to take you to the airport for the flight to Boca Manu (45 minutes).The guide will be waiting for you at Boca Manu airstrip and from here we take the boat to Manu Biostation (2 hours). In the afternoon, visit Blanco lake looking for giant river otters, monkeys, caimans and birds. The night is spent camping on the roofed platform at the Manu Biostation. Optional night walk.
2nd day: Macaw Clay Lick and Mammal Salt Lick
Early in the morning we go to the macaw clay lick where parrots, parakeets and macaws arrive to eat the clay. After this natural show, we explore the trails around the Manu Biostation, always looking for monkeys and birds. After lunch we go to the Maquisapayoj mammal salt lick, where we'll spend the night at the specially-made platform to observe tapirs when they come to feed.
3rd day: Maquisapayoj - Boca Manu
After breakfast we go to Boca Manu and Limonal Guard Station where we explore the trails inside the Reserved Zone of the Manu National Park. The night is spent in the lodge at Boca Manu village.
4th day: Boca Manu - Cuzco
After breakfast we go to the airstrip and take the flight back to Cusco. Transfer to your hotel.
